How to knit a sweater seamless?
Do you love knitting, but hate seaming and weaving the ends? Me too! You will have much less headache if you knit the whole garment seamless with circular needle in the round. The easies way to do this, is to knit top down. When seamless sweater is knitted top down, you’ll start working from the neck. It is also possible to work seamless from the bottom up, but this technique is a bit more complicated.
How to knit top down?
First cast on stitches for the neck and work in rib. After ribbing, increase few stitches evenly spread. Now the yoke starts. Yoke can be round or with raglan lines. After the yoke, the stitches of front, back and sleeves are separated. The stitches of the sleeves are placed on waste yarn. Cast on few stitches at underarms and then join front and back together for the body. The sleeves are knitted afterwards in the round with double pointed needles.
Here I introduce you my new design, Niitty-sweater, knitted top down.
Niitty
Niitty -sweater
You know those chilly and sunny autumn mornings when mist rises from the fields and lakes? That feeling I wanted to capture in this design. It’s a moment when you want to wear something warm layered over a long sleeve tee or blouse.
What yarn is best for Niitty?
I chose for this model very special material. This yarn is made by a small spinnery in Southern-Finland, Ruukin Kehräämö ja Puoti. They make yarn of the wool of their own alpacas and blend it with wild silk collected from Kalahari Desert. Since this material is not for everyone available, I recommend for this pattern brushed alpaca, alpaca blends or fingering weight wool together with mohair.
Knitting the sleeve
This basic sweater has special raglan sleeve. After separation of the sleeves, the back and the front are knitted flat for few more rows before joining. This makes the armhole wide and comfortable. Yet it is possible to knit narrow sleeve with lots of space at underarm. This is way better sleeve than normal raglan, when there are only some extra stitches casted on at underarm. There are also extra rows added to back to shape the neckline.
Another detail: The extra wide raglan lines continue diagonally on the sides of the body. Niitty has also a delicate lace pattern in front.
