How to make poncho of two rectangular panels?
Knitted poncho made of two panels is an easy project. Choose stretchy openwork knitting pattern and soft and light yarn. Knit two similar rectangular panels. Then join the other long sides and the cast-off edges together. Leave an opening in the corner for the neck. Fold the fabric in the corner to wrong side and stitch the edges invisible.
Here I introduce you my poncho pattern Säde made with this method. Säde is knitted with soft alpaca yarn.
Säde
Säde -poncho
Säde -poncho was made last spring when the cold and dark winter finally passed, and the first sunny days were warm enough to start knitting at the veranda of my house.
Säde is Finnish and it means ray of light. The knitting pattern is inspired by the sharp light of the spring. Fan-like pattern makes me think of rays of light filtered through the curtains in the mornings. I saw at Pinterest a bit similar kind of pattern, but it didn’t suit this purpose. After several unsuccessful samples I finally managed to design a pattern that is elegant and curving the way I wanted. Säde -poncho pattern includes the knitting chart for the design. You can use the pattern for any straight pieces, scarfs or skirts for example.
How to assemble a knitted poncho?
This kind of poncho is not completely symmetrical. The pieces are rectangles and the neck is more at the long side in the corner. If the yarn and pattern stretch perfectly, the poncho looks almost like a squire when you wear it. This asymmetric shape makes the design playful and the fabric move nicely as you see in the video.
The knitting pattern of Säde includes measurements, pattern drawings and instructions for assembling. With the same method you can knit a whole bunch of ponchos! Just choose every time a new lace-pattern and variate the design. Enjoy the creativity!
What yarn to use for ponchos?
Choose fingering weight or lace weight yarn. Use a bit larger needles than usually to create lacy, openwork pattern. This knitting pattern looks the best when the stitches are loose and the fabric stretches well.
I used for Säde alpaca yarn Teetee Alpakka (100% alpaca, 50 g = 166 m) sold by Tekstiiliteollisuus Oy. Any fingering weight alpaca yarn is good and very soft merino wool will also do. Avoid hard and heavy yarns. The thinner the poncho, the better the drape. Lace weight yarns and mohair could work, but please do knit a sample first. The right gauge is important, choose larger needles if needed. More instructions you will find in the knitting pattern of Säde.
